New Words v16.1

Ще в липні 2015-го року, я опублікував ряд нових слів, які я взнав на той момент. Зараз – наступна серія слів. В цей період джерелами нових слів були:

  • “The Good Wife” [tv series], серіал на юридичну тему, адвокати, судді і тому подібне.
  • На роботі, я проходив ряд тренінгів на фінансову тематику, про гроші, про безпеку в банках, хабарництво, підкупи і тому подібне.
  • Ну і звичайно простий пошук в Інтернеті. Читаю час від часу генеалогічні/генетичні статті, коментарі інших людей.
  • Випадково натрапив на сайт vocabulary.com а там маленький тест-опитування.
  • В процесі генеалогічного та історичного дослідження натрапив на цвинтарі в селі на дуже стару могилу. І коли шукав інформацію про типи надгробних пам’ятників та методи їх чистки, “набрався” цікавих слів.

Отож, ось які нові слова я взнав з того часу.

  • scrutiny – вивчення (critical observation or examination).
  • domicile – місце проживання, доміцильований.
  • sought – past form of “to seek”. 🙂 Sounds like thought – past form from “to think”.
  • fraud – wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.
  • dormant – бездіяльний.
  • bribery – хабарництво.
  • itineraries – маршрути.
  • prone – схильний.
  • to ascertain – встановлювати.
  • reluctant – неохочий.
  • fines – штрафи.
  • custody – зберігання.
  • to circumvent – обійти.
  • affirmation – затвердження.
  • Due Diligence Requirements – Вимоги до заходів.
  • Intermediary – посередник.
  • Whistle–blowing – донос.
  • diversity – різноманітність.
  • grievance – Скарга.
  • on pro-rata basis – на пропорційній основі.
  • vigilant – пильний.
  • drawer – висувний ящик.
  • to adhere – дотримуватися.
  • waste bin – відро для сміття.
  • plunge – падіння.
  • dissemination – поширення.
  • steering – руль, кермо.
  • Excerpt – витримка.
  • power of attorney – довіреність.
  • hare – заєць 🙂
  • fluck – flying fuck.
  • buggy, buggies – very lightweight horse-drawn vehicles
  • gavel (n) – a small mallet with which an auctioneer, a judge, or the chair of a meeting hits a surface to call for attention or order.
  • to gavel (v) -bring (a hearing or person) to order by use of a gavel.
  • fringe (n) – an ornamental border of threads left loose or formed into tassels or twists, used to edge clothing or material.
  • to fringe (v)  – decorate (clothing or material) with a fringe.
  • brazen – (adj)bold and without shame, (v) endure an embarrassing or difficult situation by behaving with apparent confidence and lack of shame
  • repose – is a formal or literary term used to mean the act of resting, or the state of being at rest. Repose is also a state of mind: freedom from worry.
  • verb rally describes that last push to finish a difficult something.
  • lofty – високий.
  • sublime – піднесений, is an adjective meaning “awe-inspiringly grand, excellent, or impressive,”
  • If you are ardent, you are passionate about something.
  • to whet – вигострювати, to sharpen the blade of (a tool or weapon). [Middle English whetten, from Old English hwettan, related to hvæt sharp, Old High German hwezzen, Old Norse hvetja, Gothic hvatjan]
  • colon (:) – in medical terms, your colon is part of your digestive system, and its purpose is to extract water from solid waste.
  • seize – захоплювати, to take hold of suddenly and forcibly.
  • frisk – поліцейський обшук, (of a police officer or other official) pass the hands over (someone) in a search for hidden weapons, drugs, or other items.
  • squint – косоокість, або дієслово, яке вказує чи просить зробити очима такий жест.
  • mist – туман, мгла. “A cloud of tiny water droplets suspended in the atmosphere at or near the earth’s surface limiting visibility”.
  • spritz – бризкати.
  • chalk – крейда
  • charcoal– кусок вугілля.
  • rubbing wax – восковий олівець, чи щось подібне, зроблене з воску.
  • crayon – олівець.
  • rag – ганчірка.
  • tuck – складка, загин.
  • bigoted – нетерпимий. “having or revealing an obstinate belief in the superiority of one’s own opinions and a prejudiced intolerance of the opinions of others.”
  • bogus – фіктивний. “not genuine or true; fake.”
  • shrift – сповідь, confession.
  • grease – масло, мастило, смалець, жир після жаріння.
  • broth – бульйон.
  • rancid – гіркий, прогірклий, протухлий.
  • mingle – to talk to a group of people you don’t know, to get to know people.
  • mop – швабра.
  • to enact – вводити в дію, постановляти, ставити на сцені.
